Early Morning Wakeup Call

Standing on the temporary flight line shortly before sunrise Adria took a moment to look things over. With recent events she’d been doing a lot of coordination from the ground. Now it was time to get a good bird’s eye view from the cockpit of her fighter. Doing her job effectively required being able to understand how things worked both ways inside and out.

Experience had taught her to be vigilant yet aggressive. Tempest knew their best opportunity to maintain a solid edge against the enemy was to take advantage of any weaknesses as soon as they were spotted. In fact she’d just walked out of an update session with her wing intelligence liaison. Part of this mornings sortie gave them the go to act on a newly detected void in enemy defenses.

Their usual patrol rotation and times had been fluctuating to keep the bad guys guessing. As a secondary objective Adria wanted to gather an updated set of aerial intelligence to present Commodore O’Shea. Climbing into the cockpit she strapped in and secured her helmet. Quickly running through her preflight checklist, “Tempest to 220th comm check.”

Noting each pilot’s acknowledgement mentally. So far there were no problems. Her next call was to Flight Ops, “Tempest to Flight Ops requesting expedited departure clearance.” Checking her HUD display. Relieved to see all of her fighter’s systems were showing green.

Adria pushed the throttle full forward when the familiar call filtered over the designated comm frequency. Verifying their time to target she felt the familiar emotions of taking off for a combat sortie. Their ETA to target put them dropping their surprise just at sunrise.

It also allowed the 220th pilots to get in and out before the other side had a clue what happened. They'd land back at the Forward Operating Base in time to enjoy breakfast. No matter what Adria wouldn't relax until the mission had been completed.
