Transitions

Mission: Bloodpath
Location: Osaka, Japan, Earth
Timeline: 8-days-ago

“I’m looking for Gen Takagi” Emiko announced in a loud and powerful voice from the open front door into the crowded bar.

A few of the patrons turned and looked, more out of curiosity at the sound than anything else, but that curiosity quickly subsided and the men quickly returned to their drinking and conversations.

Emiko smiled, then walked into the bar. All around her she could see a veritable sea of undulating dragons, serpents and other mystical creatures tattooed onto the arms of just about everyone present. This was not unusual as this particular bar was a well-known Yakuza stronghold and the seat of Osaka’s powerful Sugai clan, of which Gen Takagi was a top-level enforcer, and also for whom Emiko had an arrest warrant for two murders.

As she stepped further in, she tracked movement behind her as two of the enforcers, the young, strong junior types with lots to prove, ferocious strength, but no experinece, came around behind her. She took another step, shrugging her shoulders slightly and allowing the leather coat the slide off them and drop to the floor behind her. She was unarmed, knowing full well that a phaser or firearm would be more dangerous than helpful to her in such a crowded place likely filled with so many hostiles, so all that she had was her badge clipped to her belt and a closed handcuff case. The message was clear from her stance, she was hear to get Takagi, and expected a fight.

The two thugs happily obliged, and fell on her simultaneously from opposite sides, which was their first mistake. As they lunged forward, Emi took a quick step backwards allowing the two big men to clumsily crash into one another as she snapped her left foot forward hard into the jaw of the man to her left while grabbing the ponytail of the man on her right and pulling it toward her, simultaneously turning her now upturned left leg and planting the knee solidly into the man’s face. The result was the instantaneous and rather impressive spectacle of a tiny 96 lb woman knocking two 240 lb men unconscious in the blink of an eye.

“I won’t ask again. Gen Takagi!”

What followed was a melee of epic proportions as over a dozen Yakuza beat each other up as they attacked and missed Emiko while she quickly put down any and everyone who came close to her. After barely a minute, all fourteen of the young enforcers were either out cold or whimpering on the ground with broken bones.

“You have some nerve little girl” Ryo Sugai, the senior member of the clan currently present said.

“I have a warrant for Gen Takagi’s arrest. He crossed the line.”

“Yes, the boy was, unfortunate” the crime boss conceded.

“You can kill each other all you want Sugai-san, but you know the rules. Now, Gen Takagi, or I’m sure I can come back with a warrant for you. Not for murder I’ll admit, and I’m sure you’ll buy your way off, but it will be an inconvenience, and worse than that, a loss of face.”

Emiko’s gaze didn’t waver. “You said it yourself, it was unfortunate.”

“I don’t imagine you will let me handle it?”

“No.”

Just then a man came out from behind the bar with a sword in his hand.

“I’m not going to prison” he said to Emi, then turned to his boss and pleaded “Please, let me take my own life.”

The crime boss looked up at Emiko, who just nodded in the affirmative.

With that, the man knelt on the ground, grasped the sword and plunged it into his belly. The entire crowd just watched, nobody offered him a quick release, until he finally passed out from loss of blood. Emiko waited another ten minutes as nobody approached him, then finally touched two fingers to his neck and feeling no pulse, she nodded at Sugai and then turned around, picked up her jacket and walked out of the bar.

The ride back to the police station was silent, her partner, Jin Katsuo, said nothing. The younger sergeant had watched the entire transaction from just outside the open door, always at the ready with his phaser rifle, but knowing his assistance wouldn’t be likely. Finally, they arrived and the pair walked straight into the commissioner’s officer.

“No arrest?”

“The suspect took his own life.”

“Probably for the best” the commissioner said, then looking over at Katsuo and back to Oda he handed her a padd. “Came in this morning” he said, then turning back to Katsuo “Looks like you’ll be getting a new partner.”

Emiko read the padd and smiled, suddenly looking like a 12-year-old schoolgirl. “Starfleet’s reinstated my commission.”

“Congratulations Oda-san, you will be missed” the commissioner said.

“It has been an honor to serve” Emi replied, then quickly took her badge off of her belt and extended it to the commissioner in two hands, a sign of respect.

“Keep it, as a souvenir. You were on the short list for captain, you know.”

“I know, but I’d be no good behind a desk.”
