| Personal History | Keith was born "by the sweetest sunset that I have ever seen" his mother would later remember. His father, Christopher Anderson, was an expert in advanced nano-biotechnology. While his mother, Mwana Tanner, was a researcher in genetics. They traveled around the quadrant to Vulcan, Qo'Nos and Bajor on various assignments for Starfleet. They took the young Keith with them everywhere they went, filling his childhood with an endless gathering of new experiences and knowledge about the universe and other species, cultures and beliefs. All this stimulated his innate curiosity, which together with his bright mind, were developed in the best schools located in the places they visited. While his education was extensive, his constant travels made Keith feel like an outsider everywhere he went, a feeling that would take years for Keith to overcome even once he joined Starfleet. As Keith grew, he found his parents were busier and busier, leaving him often alone with his uncle, Boris Tanner. Boris was the only relative Keith knew apart from his own parents. At first Keith did not like his uncle and his parents treated the man coldly. When it came to his uncle, his parents were respectful, but not affectionate. However, Keith and his uncle's relationship was much closer, and developed unhindered as Keith's parents left him with Boris during some assignments or projects. Starting very early on in his youth, his uncle had kept him trained in almost all forms of martial arts, both with bare hands and with weapons. He also instilled in him a strict training regimen, which survives in his routine to this day. These training sessions were rough and arduous, yet Keith enjoyed every minute of it. His mother taught him how to ride a horse, while his father gave him his own love for history and art. His parents made several attempts to steer Keith away from Starfleet aspirations, but his time on several worlds introduced him to worlds and cultures he did not want to be isolated from. As he grew older, Keith fell in love with flying and his uncle, who was in Starfleet, encouraged this strongly. It was Keith's love of flying, coupled with his thirst for exploration and adventure that pushed Keith into Starfleet. While Keith could not foresee what was to come, his uncle would step in and serve as his mentor and career adviser for years to come. Keith joined Starfleet early, taking the Operations course coupled with several Engineering courses. His bright intelligence made him one of the best students, and very envied too. Although his parents had always taught him, in almost an obsessive way, how to discern right from wrong, his first years in Starfleet Academy were difficult. His army brat upbringing left Keith with a lot of unresolved anger and aggression, which lead to several incidents as a Cadet. In one such incident he nearly killed a classmate in a fight when another cadet was attacked from behind by multiple attackers. Because of this, his impressive combat capabilities were soon noticed, but were deemed dangerous if not controlled, and quickly. In response to this incident, Keith was sent by his uncle and Starfleet Academy on a cadet exchange program with the Klingon Empire. There he was trained in an even more ruthless way, yet Keith found it oddly appealing. His time with the Klingons imparted into Keith a sense of honor that he would never receive from being a Starfleet officer. For his cadet cruise, he embarked aboard the IKS Rankuf, B'Rel class Bird of Prey. Accustomed to harsh discipline his time upon the Rankuf was a refreshing experience. While on the cruise, war broke out against an enemy of the Empire. The Rankuf captain, to show the courage and boldness of his crew, performed a raid beyond the border. Upon crossing the border, the ship was attacked and Keith was christened by the fire of his first battle. Although very badly damaged, the Rankuf managed to return safely to Klingon space. Keith's courage and bravery caught the attention of the crew, and were commended by the Rankuf captain and later the Empire. His valiant actions earned him the Klingon Meritorious Service badge. While meaningless to his Starfleet service record, the award meant a lot to Keith, and he proudly displays it in his quarters. Keith left Qo'Nos and was soon transferred to the USS Hood, an Akira class vessel fighting on the front line of a small yet destructive conflict with an old enemy, the Borg. He was one of the youngest officers on the ship, yet he showed the courage and competence of a veteran, serving in Engineering. During a bold rescue mission behind enemy lines, in which the Hood evacuated a human colony and a biology research team, Keith was gravely injured. This, among other reasons, resulted in him being transferred to the Operations team, an area in which he was already keenly interested in. It was a few short months after his injuries had time to heal that the Hood was destroyed in a horrific battle. It took more than twelve hours for Small Borg vessels to conquer the ship and the fighters protecting it. The crew showed highest courage by defending every inch of the starship from the overwhelming enemy forces. Before dying, the captain ordered everyone to abandon ship and inserted the auto-destruction code. Only a handful of the crew made it back home, with Keith badly wounded. Keith spent one month in the hospital recovering, having suffered numerous close calls with the Borg drones. Upon leaving the hospital, he swore he would not only remember all the names of the heroes who had died on that sacrificial altar, but to honor their memory by fighting and defeating the Borg. His time spent in the hospital was especially hard on him as he suffered a bit of survivor's guilt. With the loss of the Hood, Keith lost friends, and even lost some "family." However, Keith pushed himself to move on, as enemies abroad was taking the upper hand and Starfleet needed all its personnel. Right out of the hospital bed, Keith was assigned to the USS Concorde as their Assistant Chief of Operations. However, soon after joining the vessel, an attack against a vessel carrying his parents brought about fresh grief. A rescue team found his mother dead body protecting a child from the crash of a wall. The child miraculously survived. Keith's father also went missing in the attack, but his body was never found, much to Keith's dismay. Only his uncle was left to call family. After a small leave of absence, it was his uncle that guided him onto the Gemini, this time as Chief of Ops. The Gemini helped him overcome most of his pain that his life had dealt him until now. It has taken Keith years to come to terms with all of his past experiences. Seeing his friends, his family ripped from him has done much to damage Keith inside, even causing nightmares to plague him to this day. However, Keith has learned to take his experiences, and has grown to be a stronger officer due to his past hardships. |
