Personality & Traits

General Overview Gates is a well kept officer. He has been on a number of different and notable assignments - from Medical to Intelligence that has given him the experience to lead and become successful. He is mentally keen and physically strong but he has had relapses of an injury that he had long ago in the academy. Nothing has affected his duty to Starfleet or his family or friends but this has causes him a few eyebrows here and there. Only time will tell what will happen with this.
Strengths & Weaknesses He is very disciplined and a great mentor. He is a good listener and a good friend. He does whatever it takes to complete the mission and he has served a long time in various capacities. He is a strong leader.

Gates tends to let out his personal issues and skeletons over a bottle of Jack Daniels. He tends to over drink which could inhibit his ability to think. He tries his very best to do this on his personal time but the occasional flask in the chest pocket helps on occasion.
Ambitions The only ambition he has is to serve Starfleet to the best of his abilities.
Hobbies & Interests Gates loves a game of chess and target practice on the holodeck. The bar is his home away from home, so you may find him there on on his time off. Or in his quarters. Whichever is closer.

Personal History Robert Gates was born on February 2nd, 2361 on the Lunar Surface. He has 2 younger brothers and 1 older sister. His younger brothers are Joseph Gates and Lucas Gates and their sister Melissa.

Robert and his siblings had very difficult childhoods. When they were all relatively young, their parents died in a shuttle accident on Earth, leaving them orphans. The Federation’s Children Protective Service (FCPS) took the children in so that they could be adopted or at the very list assisted with their basic needs. Robert and his siblings never wanted to leave each other. Every time a family came into the FCPS for adoption they would never pick Robert or his siblings because if by taking one they would need to take all and four kids was a large risk to take and Robert could understand that. He knew that four kids were a responsibility not many families could handle.
Robert and his siblings stood in the FCPS all the way up to the age of 14. It was longer than they had expected or hoped for. Even though they knew four siblings would be hard to handle for the average couple looking for adoption, 9 years in the service was a pretty long time and a surprise to them that no family had adopted them yet. Yet is the big word here. On May 20, 2374 a retired Commodore by the name of Julius Sanders, former Commandant of Starfleet’s Intelligence Agency agreed to adopt Gates and his siblings.

At first the switch from government assistance to private residences was a big change. The atmosphere was very dry. They were quiet around the Commodore. It was strange. Medals and awards, pictures with top brass and pips all around the house. It was as if they were living in a living museum. Julius Sanders was a legend, an important man in Starfleet or once was. He never married or had children but he wanted to leave his estate with children of goodwill. Gates and his siblings never were a troublesome group. They just had bad luck at the wrong time and place.
The old man Sanders never talked much. He gave them everything they needed. A roof over their head, food, clothing, presents at Christmas. Gates felt bad for him. Sanders never got a chance to be able ‘love’ someone. He did the best he could with the children. One day while Roberts was cleaning the living room where most of the memorabilia from when Sanders was in Starfleet, he saw a picture of Sanders standing next to the late James Kirk. It was a site too see. Sanders must have been in his teens. Sanders came into the room as he Robert was looking and for the first time opened his mouth and started a conversation with Robert. He explained that while at the Academy Captain Kirk visited and told the students attending that;
“Everything you do in life has a purpose and destiny. But nothing you do in life comes close to the thrill, the excitement and the honor of making a difference in someone else’s life. That doing something above and beyond yourself is greater then oneself.”

Robert took this to heart and understood this. Robert knew that his life was no fairy tale and definitely was not bells and whistles, but he knew that if he could make a difference in this life he could do that in Starfleet. Robert convinced his siblings to join him and they did. With his two younger brothers not hesitating to join their older brother as loyal brothers should, the sister was a bit more challenging. She was like a mother too them. Making sure they cleaned themselves after play. Tucking them in at night. She convinced herself that if they joined and she did too, she would still be able to look over them as she has already been doing.

On January 2nd 2378, Robert and his siblings joined Starfleet. It became the best 4 years of their lives. Learning self defense, astro-phenomenon, flight control, repair and replace, offensive and defensive strategic operations, life saving skills, and command. The drive of service and duty catapulted them in success. All 4 siblings may not have received top honors; they were all in the top 15% of their class. But something was coming, something they cannot be avoided if they wanted to continue to pursue a life in Starfleet. They needed to adapt to change and that meant getting used to being apartment. All 4 knew they would not be able to all serve together to in the last 2 years they started seeing less and less of each other. This was done purposely so that the feeling of longing for the others would be controlled. They had never separated before.

On June 9th 2382 Robert Gates and his siblings finally graduated from Starfleet as full-fledged commissioned Ensigns. Robert graduated third in his class in legal studies, and was Operations Student of the Year in graduation year.
